Cathedral Notre Dame

With its Gothic grandeur of Notre Dame in Paris, not only dominate the river Seine and the Ile-de-la-Cite and history but the Frenchcapital. The location today high in the majestic edifice sacred ancientRomans erected a temple dedicated to Jupiter, which was followed by a basilica and then a Romanesque church dedicated to St.Stephen, built Hildebert Merovingian king, in 528.
 
The initiative to build a cathedral, about 900 years ago, belonged toMaurice de Sully IUI, bishop of Paris, due to the increasing number ofbelievers. Work began in 1163, but have not been concluded than180 years later, in 1345, and then without the final finishes.Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built between illiteracy,so that was designed to present in a more plastic Bible scenes andcharacters in portals, paintings and stained glass windows that adorn.

Western side is downright spectacular. Tower in the south, almostcathedral bell, the bell is famous Emmanuel, last rebuilt in 1631 is related just to the north tower of the famous gallery of the Grand Gallery chimeras or the carved figures are frightening apocalypticinspired by old Christian legends. The lower level includes thefamous rose window with a diameter of 10 meters in front of hisstatue of the Virgin with the Infant in her arms. Many of its elementsstained glass cathedral dates from the construction of the thirteenthcentury. Last lower level, called the Gallery of Kings, has a line of 28statues of the kings of Judah and Israel, rebuilt after beingbeheaded by the revolutionaries of 1789, thought they are the kingsof France. Sculptures and stained glass windows have a strong influence on which naturalist provides almost human expression. At the bottom are three portals: the north portal of the Virgin, in the center and south Ultimate Judgment Portal Portal scenes from the life of St. Anna with mother Mary.
 
The interior has been transformed in the middle of the thirteenthcentury and have a maximum space and light. There is here asculpture titled Virgin of Paris. Made in flowering time the city by contributing merchants who saw the cathedral a source of civicpride, the statue stands out is rather a symbol of wealth so arrogantof piety. Objects of the cathedral are of considerable value andexperience: reliquary contains thus ring the holy crown of thorns andother relics of the Saviour the Lord's Passion of St. Louis bought in1238. The organ, dating from 1730 and restored in 1962, is the largest in France. Since 1991 the cathedral was a restoration program of interior and exterior.
